Rag & Bone Edinburgh

Over the past few years men’s grooming has gone mainstream, no longer does a spot of shameless pampering and pride in pruning the mane only appeal to hipsters.

However, looking to offer a timeless amenity are new Edinburgh barbers Rag & Bone. Opening its doors in November last year, Rag & Bone is a shiny new addition to a plethora of inner city barber shops, hopeful in standing out as a cut above the rest.

Owners Jamie and Robert joined forces in sealing their vision of introducing a men’s hairdressing locus where all styles and ages feel at ease and catered to. Jamie told EdinBeauty, “We are not really trying to reinvent the wheel, we are just trying to do things with our own twist.”

“The shop speaks for itself because there’s nothing quite like it in Edinburgh at the moment. It’s quite cut back, industrial and exposed.”

And it’s true. The aesthetic of the shop is the essence of cool. It is urban, open and uncluttered. At first glance you would not be alone in assuming that the business is tailored to the modern man. Yet, this is not at all Rag & Bone’s ethos.

“Right now in the industry barbering is getting remarkably popular, especially amongst younger guys. There are certain niche styles that seem to be dominating the streets. Whereas we wanted to create a place that was timeless, that doesn’t just fit into a theme or trend. [Rag & Bone] is somewhere that everybody can come to and it’s still pretty cool at the same time.”

Cultivating connections with microbreweries means as a kind gesture, or perhaps a token of their gratitude, Rag & Bone offer their clients a free locally sourced beer at weekends as a chance to unwind while deciding on a new hairdo.

“It is something that we started because by Friday afternoon most of the guys have had a long week so just a wee complimentary beer and a new haircut can really help.”

As the manbun fades into its dissolution, new hairstyle trends are ruling the corners of the capital. Robert and Jamie shared their findings in what trends are on the come up for 2016.

“We’ve got guys that coming in with shoulder length hair, guys that come in with military crops,” Jamie adds, “ I’m still very much a clean hairline, swept back kind of guy. We’re seeing a lot more length coming in as well; the scissors are coming out more than the clippers! It’s nice because it’s eclectic.”

With the slicked back look making an appearance onto both men and women’s fashion radar this season, Robert noted numerous customers have been rocking a side parting.

“There is so much happening. The curtains kind of look is coming back and guys were even experimenting with perms for a while.”

Inevitably fashion and beauty stride hand and hand. With a killer outfit comes a suave hairstyle. Edinburgh’s streets have been chock-a-block with fashion forward individuals raising the bar for personal style and the art of its expression. The owners of Rag & Bone reflected on how the nature of Edinburgh’s men’s fashion scene is evolving and in turn allowing freedom for a movement in trends.

“I think now more than ever people are not being categorized as much. When we were younger it was skaters, chavs and the goths. Whereas now everybody seems to be mixing together.”

“This end of town in particular is on the up. There are a lot more young professionals, students and young families while at the same time it remains home to an older generation. So, we’re getting a massive walk of life now that is not stuck in one corner of the city. Everybody seems to be integrating and I think that is apparent in Edinburgh’s street style.”

For styling men’s hair Rag & Bone have recommended their two stand out products that are stocked in their shop.

Layrite Cement Hair Clay is their all-rounder. As a clay-based product it can provide three altered types of finishing; a dry look, wet look and a stronger control. For a strong hold hairspray Rag & Bone don’t stray from their trusted Fudge Membrane Gas.
